Cain the Casual — Abel the Diligent
The account of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1–8, KJV) is not merely about two brothers; it is a contrast between two attitudes toward God.
Cain was casual. Abel was diligent.
Abel brought “of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof” (Genesis 4:4). He selected the first and the best. His offering reflected forethought, reverence, sacrifice, and faith. Scripture later confirms:
“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain…” (Hebrews 11:4, KJV)
Cain, however, merely brought “of the fruit of the ground” (Genesis 4:3). The passage does not say he brought the firstfruits or the best. His offering appears to have been given without the same care, devotion, or faith. It was an act of religion, but not an act of wholehearted worship.
God accepted Abel and his offering, but rejected Cain and his offering. This demonstrates that God first looks at the worshipper before He looks at the gift.
The Lord warned Cain:
“If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?” (Genesis 4:7, KJV)
God did not reject Cain without reason; He invited him to change. Instead of repenting, Cain became jealous, angry, and ultimately murdered his brother.
The Lesson
The difference between Cain and Abel was not simply their occupations or the materials they offered. It was the condition of their hearts.
• Cain gave what was easy and convenient to part with.
• Abel gave that which was without Blemish.
• Cain approached God casually.
• Abel approached God diligently.
• Cain’s worship was just an act to fulfil and lacked faith.
• Abel’s worship was marked by absolute faith and obedience.
God still seeks worshippers who give Him their FIRST, their BEST, and their WHOLE HEART, not merely what is left over after everything else has been attended to.
A Challenge
Every Christian should ask:
Am I worshipping like Cain – casually, giving God whatever remains? Or am I worshipping like Abel – diligently, giving God my first, my best, and my whole heart?
For Scripture reminds us:
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23, KJV)
Thus, the choice before every believer is the same today as it was in Genesis: THE CASUAL WAY OF CAIN or THE DILIGENT WAY OF ABEL.
NO ONE ELSE CAN DECIDE BUT YOU.
